University of Iowa News Release

Dec. 22, 2005

UI Names Kettner Associate Director For Public Affairs, Media Relations

Linda S. Kettner, the director of University News Services, has been named associate director for public affairs and media relations in the University of Iowa University Relations office, effective Jan. 2.

Kettner will have primary responsibility for identifying and monitoring issues developing within the university community and externally that have the potential to generate public interest and affect the university's reputation. She also will maintain open communication channels with local, state and national media, including responding to public records requests.

Kettner will report directly to Steve Parrott, director of University Relations, as well as serve on the senior management team for University Relations, and will supervise the directors of University News Services and Arts Center Relations. Her salary will be $89,500.

"In more than 17 years with University Relations, Linda has demonstrated consummate professionalism and dedication to the University of Iowa," Parrott said. "Her insatiable appetite for learning and news and her understanding of the importance of anticipating issues that will affect us keeps us all on our toes and has enabled us to communicate effectively with the public in good times and amid challenges. I look forward to continuing our work together and am confident that she will infuse this new position with the energy and creativity that have marked her tenure to date."

As director of University News Services since 1988, Kettner has overseen its transformation into a full-service media relations and communications operation. Under her direction, the staff has become more proactive in working with national media to share stories from the university and has embraced new technologies through the years to better serve both media and university audiences. She initiated the UI News Digest, a daily email containing summaries of news releases as well as national media stories that feature the UI. With more than 3,000 subscribers, the News Digest has grown into a publication in its own right and, in tandem with the University News Services Web site, serves as the first point of contact for major news about the university.

Kettner has earned distinction among her peers nationally, serving as a member of the public affairs committee of the Association of American Universities and, in 2004, as co-chair of its annual conference. She also served on the communications and marketing commission of the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) from 2000-2003, including the position of vice-chair in 2002-2003.

Before coming to the UI, Kettner was director of college relations and then assistant vice president for advancement at Wartburg College in Waverly. She also spent eight years as a reporter for the Waterloo Courier, Cedar Falls Record and Le Mars Daily Sentinel. She holds a bachelor's degree in English from the University of Northern Iowa.
