Events To Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month At UI
The University of Iowa will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with a variety of events through September. Highlights include films, dance and music. All events are open to the public. Times, dates and locations may change.
--Thursday, Sept. 1, through Saturday, Sept. 3. The UI Dance Department performs "Quatro," choreographed by the Brazilian choreographer Duarte. 8 p.m., North Hall. $12 general admission; $6 for UI students; free for children under 12. Tickets available at Iowa Memorial Union box office. For ticket information, call 319-335-3041.
--Thursday, Sept. 8 through Wednesday, Sept. 14. "Machuca." Set in Chile in the autumn of 1973, this film is a coming-of-age tale against the backdrop of political upheaval. Spanish, with English subtitles. Times vary. Bijou Theatre, Iowa Memorial Union. For screen times and ticket information, call 319-335-3045.
--Thursday, Sept. 15. Franc Contreras, a UI alumnus and Latin American correspondent for the Public Radio International program "The World." 3 p.m., Room 101, Becker Communications Studies building. A reception with Contreras will be held following the lecture during the Hispanic Heritage Month kick-off in the Latino & Native American Cultural Center, 308 Melrose Ave.
--Friday, Sept. 16. Council on the Status of Latinos welcome reception at home of President David Skorton. 5 p.m., 102 Church St. By invitation only.
--Saturday, Sept. 24. Plena Libre, a Puerto Rican big band, performs its African-tinged music. 7:30 p.m., Hancher Auditorium. Ticket prices vary. For ticket information, call the Hancher box office at 319-335-1160.
--Monday, Sept. 26. Gregory Rabassa, considered the greatest translator of his time and credited with giving the great Latin American writers their English language, appears on Live from Prairie Lights. 7 p.m., Prairie Lights Bookstore, 15 S. Dubuque St. Free.
--Thursday, October 6. Jose Porcel, Flamenco ballet dancer. 7:30 p.m., Hancher Auditorium. Ticket prices vary. For ticket information, contact the Hancher box office at 319-335-1160.
