UI Women's Groups To Host Reception Encouraging Volunteerism Aug. 31

In conjunction with the university-wide volunteer fair on Wednesday, Aug. 31, the University of Iowa Council on the Status of Women Civic Engagement Committee and Associated University Women will host a welcome reception in the North Room of the Iowa Memorial Union from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Mary Palmberg, local volunteer and activist, will speak at 5 p.m.

The reception was planned to celebrate and encourage participation in the Year of Public Engagement designated by UI President David Skorton. By holding it in conjunction with the volunteer fair, which is taking place in the adjacent IMU Main Lounge from 12:30-5:30 that day, the groups hope to facilitate increased involvement in efforts to support women at the UI and in the community.

The reception is co-sponsored by UI Human Resources, the Iowa Women's Archives, Iowa Women's Foundation, Office of Equal Opportunity and Diversity, Women in Science and Engineering and the Women's Resource and Action Center.

The Council on the Status of Women Civic Engagement Committee will hold several other events throughout the year to encourage volunteerism and raise awareness of the needs of women and girls in the community. The next event will be a panel on youth issues later in the fall, with time, date and location to be announced.

UI President David Skorton has declared the 2005-2006 academic year the Year of Public Engagement, during which the University community will be encouraged to intensify its efforts and sharpen its focus on engagement with the public and public issues at the local, state, national, and international levels.
