UI Alumni Association Welcomes New Officers, Members To Board Of Directors

The University of Iowa Alumni Association Board of Directors will welcome a new chairperson, chair-elect and four new members to begin their terms of service this fall.

New chair Ted Habte-Gabr of Los Angeles will lead the board, and H. Garland Hershey of Chapel Hill, N.C., will serve as chair-elect. Marion Elmquist and Lisa A. Veach, both of Des Moines, Julian Gutierrez III of New York City, and Benjamin Hawkins, Sr. of Coralville, will join as new members. They are among some 20 alumni representatives from across the country who help set policy and guide direction for the UIAA.

Currently a business development consultant, Habte-Gabr earned a bachelor's degree in engineering from the UI in 1989. Under his leadership, the Los Angeles Iowa Club has earned prestigious Circle of Excellence Awards from the national Council for the Advancement and Support of Education for programs celebrating the Iowa Writers' Workshop and the printmaking of Mauricio Lasansky.

Hershey graduated from the UI with a bachelor's degree in science education in 1963, a doctorate of dental surgery in 1965 and a master's degree in orthodontics in 1971. He is an orthodontics and health policy and administration professor at the University of North Carolina.

Elmquist, who earned a bachelor's degree in journalism in 1972, joins the board as the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences representative. Now an independent consultant, she boasts a long career in corporate business and communications.

Veach earned her bachelor's degree in science education from the UI in 1979 and a medical degree in 1983. The new representative of the College of Medicine, Veach practices in Des Moines with Iowa Health Physicians and holds an appointment as a clinical associate professor within the UI's internal medicine department.

Gutierrez graduated in 1991 with a bachelor of business administration and joins the board as an at-large representative. Gutierrez is director of North American mortgage-backed securities sales for the global banking group ABN-AMRO.

Hawkins, who earned a master's degree in periodontics in 1972 from the UI, will also serve as an at-large representative. After serving as a dentist with the U.S. Air Force, Hawkins spent three decades contributing to the College of Dentistry in many leadership roles. He's now a UI professor emeritus of periodontics.
