Staff Council Presents Excellence Awards To 14 UI Staff Members
The University of Iowa Staff Council has selected 14 winners of three annual awards for staff excellence.
Valerie Garr, director of diversity relations and outreach for the Office of Admissions, and Kathy Klein, secretary IV in the Graduate College, each won a Staff Council Award for Excellence in Service.
The service award is a new award to be given annually to staff members who have demonstrated exceptionally effective contributions including "exceptional imagination and dedication for improving to the university community." Service must include diverse formal and informal activities of high quality in staff governance, committee work, policy improvement, program, creation, and the like, and must be outside normal job responsibilities. Garr and Klein will be recognized at the Faculty and Staff Award Banquet this fall and will receive $500 and a commemorative gift.
Six UI staff members won Board of Regents Staff Excellence Awards, which have been given annually since 1993 to recognize "outstanding accomplishments and contributions to the five Regents institutions as well as the state of Iowa." The winners will be recognized at the Faculty and Staff Award Banquet this fall as well as at departmental events held in their honor. In addition, each awardee's department will receive a $1,000 prize to be used for his/her benefit.
The 2005 Board of Regents Staff Excellence Award winners are:
--Susan G. Assouline, associate director of the Connie Belin and Jacqueline N. Blank International Center for Gifted Education and Talent Development.
--Luke Flaherty, director of College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Academic Programs and Services.
--Grainne M.P. Martin, senior associate counsel.
--Richard Saunders, associate director of human resources and director of university benefits and payroll.
--Kevin D. Ward, senior associate director of human resources and director of employee and labor relations.
--Michael Wichman, senior program manager for the University Hygienic Laboratory.
Six additional staff members have won University of Iowa Outstanding Staff Awards, which have been given annually since 1985 to recognize staff for "outstanding accomplishments and contributions that significantly benefited or brought honor or recognition to the university." The winners will be recognized at the Faculty and Staff Award Banquet this fall as well as at departmental events held in their honor.
The 2005 University of Iowa Outstanding Staff Award winners are:
--Andrea Berg, laboratory technician for the University Hygienic Laboratory.
--Eric Dean, chief curator in the office of visual material, School of Art and Art History, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
--Bettina Hass, administrative assistant in the Dean's Office, College of Education.
--Carolyn Goddard, program associate I in the Language Media Center.
--Brenda Gritsch, administrative assistant II in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
--Jana Wessels, director of operations for the Division of Performing Arts, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
