UI Students Win Graduate College Callen Prize
The University of Iowa Graduate College has named UI seniors Denise Birkhofer and Lindsay Peterson co-recipients of the Joseph E. and Ursil I. Callen Prize. The prize is awarded to students in the College of Liberal Arts and Science who have demonstrated school or civic leadership in high school or college and have high academic records. Each recipient will receive a prize of $2,500, to be used for graduate school at the UI or any other accredited university in the United States or abroad.
Birkhofer, a Pleasant Hill native who attended East High School and Central Academy in Des Moines, graduating in 2001, will graduate from the UI in May with a bachelor's degree in art history with a minor in Spanish and certificates in international business and museum studies. She plans to begin a graduate program in art history at New York University's Institute of Fine Arts in the fall. She is the daughter of Nancy Birkhofer of 227 S. Hickory Blvd., Pleasant Hill, and Kevin Birkhofer of Cedar Rapids.
Peterson, an Ames native, and a 2001 graduate of Gilbert High School, will graduate from the UI in May with a bachelor's degree in art history with a minor in business. She plans to enter a doctoral program in art history in Fall 2006. She is the daughter of Kevin and Lynn Peterson of Ames.
Birkhofer and Peterson were honored at the Graduate Honors Award Ceremony on April 17.
