UI Student Honored For Free Enterprise Education Efforts

University of Iowa student Laura Westercamp has been recognized by Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) with the President's Service Award for her efforts to help others achieve their dreams through free enterprise education.

Her recognition came with a letter of congratulation from President George Bush and from Senators Robert Dole, John Glenn and former NFL player and business owner Darrell Green representing the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation.

Westercamp, a senior business major from Cedar Rapids, is the president of I-Envision, the student entrepreneur association at the UI's John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center (JPEC)

"Laura is an excellent example of University of Iowa students who prioritize giving back to their community. As the current president of I-Envision and as an active club member for the past three years, Laura has taken the lead role in developing and implementing several entrepreneurship initiatives which have had a positive impact on youth and adults in our community," said Dawn Bowlus, JPEC student activities and outreach coordinator.

To earn the award, Westercamp completed 100 hours of service through participation in SIFE activities, developed and coordinated through I-Envision. While at the UI, she has been devoted to teaching children about entrepreneurship. She was a counselor in JPEC's Youth Entrepreneurship Camp, where she developed curriculum and activities for children interested in starting their own businesses. Westercamp also worked on a program at Roosevelt Elementary School in Iowa City, teaching students about economics, conservation and basic entrepreneurial concepts through games and small group sessions.

Working on several community service projects, Westercamp coordinated a supply drive for Iraqi children and provided mentoring in finance and marketing to tenants of Uptown Bill's Small Mall. She also helped develop resume skills and basic interview skills for Shelter House residents.
