UI Dance Forum Presents Master Class Series April 16 And 23
The University of Iowa Dance Forum and Youth Ballet will sponsor master classes by distinguished guest artists George de la Pena and Susan Toumine from 10:30 a.m. - noon Saturdays, April 16 and 23 in the Loft studio of UI Halsey Hall.
Participation costs $25 per class, and classes may be observed by dance teachers for $10. Intermediate to advanced ballet students, ages 12-19, are eligible to participate in the classes.

De la Pena, who will conduct class on April 16, is a visiting faculty member in the UI Dance Department. He began his career with American Ballet Theatre after graduating from George Balanchine's School of American Ballet. He worked with choreographers including George Balanchine, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Martha Clarke, Alonzo King, Kenneth MacMillan, Mark Morris, Rudolf Nureyev, Dwight Rhoden, Jerome Robbins, Antony Tudor, Twyla Tharp, Glen Tetley, Doug Varone and Dan Wagoner.
In 1978 he was chosen to portray Vaslav Nijinsky in the Paramount Pictures/Herbert Ross film "Nijinsky." He followed that with numerous other projects for film and television. On Broadway he was featured in "Woman of the Year" with Lauren Bacall and Raquel Welch and the Tony Award-winning revival of "On Your Toes" with Natalia Makarova, and he performed in the Lincoln Center Theater production of Graciela Daniele's musical theater adaptation of the Gabriel Garcia Marquez short story "Chronicle of a Death, Foretold."
Toumine, who will lead the April 23 class, was born in Great Britain and has been living in Montreal since 1969. She trained at the Classical Ballet School in Ottawa and the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School, as well as in New York, London and Cannes. She danced for Nesta Toumine in the Ottawa Ballet Imperial, Rosella Hightower in France, Anton Dolin, Alexandra Danilova and as a soloist with Les Grands Ballets Canadiens.
She taught ballet at l'Ecole Superieure de Dance du Quebec for 16 years, and has been ballet mistress for Les Ballet Jazz de Montreal, Le Jeune Ballet du Quebec, the Ottawa Ballet and France's Nice Ballet Theatre. She has been on the faculty of the Banff Centre since 1984.
The Dance Department is a unit of the Division of Performing Arts in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
