Homecoming Festivities Under Way

Homecoming 2004 is under way, commemorating the 75th anniversary of Kinnick Stadium and honoring former University of Iowa athletic director Bump Elliott as this year's parade grand marshal.

To accommodate the parade, downtown streets will be blocked to traffic at times on Friday, Oct. 1.

Elliott served as the UI's athletic director for 21 years. He was a prominent halfback for the University of Michigan in the 1940s and later became head football coach at Michigan from 1959-68. He was also an assistant at UI from 1952-1956 and returned as athletic director in 1970.

To commemorate the event, a special 75th anniversary of Kinnick Stadium button is on sale, as well as a commemorative t-shirt. Buttons may be purchased for $2, t-shirts for $12 ($14 for size XXL) at the Hawk Shop and University Book Store.

This year's other Homecoming activities include:

Thursday, Sept. 30
Iowa Shout, 7 p.m., Main Lounge, Iowa Memorial Union. Greek chapters and student organizations show off their talents and creativity. Each pairing consists of a sorority and a fraternity or two student organizations that pair up to create a four-minute skit, accompanied by dance.

Friday, Oct. 1
Homecoming parade and pep rally, 5:45 p.m., Downtown, Pentacrest. Elliott will be honored during the pep rally, and the Homecoming king and queen will be crowned.

The step off time for the parade is at 5:45 p.m. Many downtown parking spots will be posted for no parking on Oct. 1 downtown and east of the downtown Iowa City area.

Saturday, Oct. 2
Football game against Michigan State, 11:10 a.m., Kinnick Stadium.

This year's sponsors are WB-TV 20, Coral Ridge Mall, Roberts Dairy, University Book Stores, UI Alumni Association, KZIA FM (Z102.9), Taco Bell, Iowa Memorial Union, Iowa Hawk Shop and University of Iowa Athletics Hall of Fame.
