UI Alumni Gather For Homecoming Reunion 2004

This year's University of Iowa Homecoming Reunion festivities will glitter with black and gold as alumni return to Iowa City Sept. 30 to Oct. 3, reuniting with classmates at activities such as a pep rally, reunion class dinners and other campus gatherings.

The University of Iowa Alumni Association (UIAA), along with several UI colleges, are sponsoring Homecoming Reunion Weekend, which is a great opportunity for alumni to come back to campus to celebrate and reconnect with the UI, said Staci Valenta, the Alumni Association's Reunion Director.

Homecoming Reunion honors those who graduated from the UI 10, 20 and 25-years ago. In addition, the UI Scottish Highlanders will be gathering for their reunion this same weekend and march in the Homecoming Parade. The Scottish Highlanders are a student group dedicated to practicing and performing the Scottish arts of piping, drumming and dancing. The group was formed in 1936 at the UI, and has a long tradition of performing at football games, parades and at competitions. This is the first reunion of the Highlanders since 1986, Valenta added.

The Homecoming activities start on Thursday, Sept. 30, with the Nicholas Meyer Film Festival, where alumni can enjoy a free screening at the Bijou Theater in the Iowa Memorial Union of "The Human Stain," based on the Philip Roth novel and featuring the screenplay of Nicholas Meyer, a 1968 graduate of the UI.

The Homecoming Parade begins at 5:45 p.m. Oct. 1 in downtown Iowa City. Following the parade, alumni will gather with UI students for the Homecoming pep rally. The alumni band will also march in the parade, an Iowa homecoming tradition.

On Saturday, Oct. 2, the Hawkeyes take on Michigan State (time to be announced) for the Homecoming game.

Several college activities are planned during Homecoming weekend, as well as special celebrations for the Carver College of Medicine classes of 1969, 1974, the Law classes of 1969 and 1974, and the Pharmacy class of 1999, all of which will be invited back for this special weekend.
