UI Dance Department Presents Thesis Concert By Erica Chinn

The 2004-2005 schedule of student performances in the University of Iowa Dance Department will begin with a Thesis Concert featuring performances by graduate student Erica Chinn at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, Sept. 23-25, in the Space/Place Theatre of UI North Hall.

In addition to the works featuring Chinn, the concert will present the work of student choreographers Diego Carrasco, Gretchen Alterowitz and Tom Truss.

Chinn, a veteran of the UI Dancers in Company touring ensemble, will be spotlighted in the premiere of "Ark" by dance faculty member Charlotte Adams, the solo "11 Moments" by graduate student Daniel Stark, and the solo "I Owe You . . . From My Heart to Yours," in which Chinn collaborated on the choreography.

Adams' new work features music by UI composer Michael Cash and a reading of the poem "Ark" by Christopher Merrill, director of the UI International Writing Program.

Carrasco's "Migration" is a quintet initially inspired by a fairy tale about brothers who magically turned into ravens. He says, "The piece has since expanded beyond that initial narrative concept and became an abstract work investigating how lighting effects can alter the audience's perception or expectation of a central focus."

Truss' sextet, "Tsunami," is set to music by Prokofiev, and Alterowitz will perform her "Palimpsest," set to music by Smetana.

Admission to Erica Chinn's Thesis Concert will be $12 (UI student $6; Free admission for children under 12).

Tickets may be purchased in advance from the University Box Office in the Iowa Memorial Union.
