UI Alumni Association Offers Reward To Catch Herky Vandals
In response to the latest acts of vandalism inflicted on the popular Herky on Parade statues, the University of Iowa Alumni Association (UIAA) is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction in connection with these crimes.
In an attack during the early hours of Saturday, Oct. 9, unknown assailants tore from its base and threw into the street the "Reflections of U" Herky sponsored by the UIAA that was located on the Pentacrest. Covered in mirror mosaic tiles, "Reflections of U" recently received the Fans' Choice Award from visitors to the Herky on Parade website. The Dance Marathon Herky located near the Iowa Memorial Union, which was created by student members of an organization that raises funds for sick children, was also badly damaged in the same attack.
Since the Herky on Parade public art project was launched in May as part of the Kinnick Stadium 75th anniversary celebrations, several of the statues located throughout Iowa City and Coralville have been damaged.
"These cowardly acts of mindless violence are a sign of callous disregard and disrespect for all the people who invested their time, energy, and efforts in this worthwhile project," said UIAA president Vince Nelson. "It's a blow to all those artists and volunteers who toiled for weeks to create the statues, the people who gained such enormous pleasure from the Herkys, and everyone who simply takes pride in the University of Iowa, Iowa City, and Coralville.
"We believe that such aggressive and selfish actions should not be tolerated," he added. "As proud supporters of the University of Iowa and the Herky on Parade project, we hope that this reward will encourage people who witnessed the vandalism, or who know the perpetrators, to come forward. Such acts of uncivil behavior erode the fabric of our community."
Anyone with information about attacks on the Herky statues is encouraged to contact the University of Iowa campus police at 335-5022.
