Dettmer Named Associate Dean In College Of Liberal Arts and Sciences
Helena Dettmer, a University of Iowa professor of classics, has been named associate dean for academic programs and services in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences -- a position she has held on an interim bases since August. Her appointment will run through July 2009.
Dettmer will also continue as director of the CLAS Division of Interdisciplinary Programs while a search is underway for her successor. She has been the division's director since its founding in 2001.
Dettmer takes over a position previously held by Fred Antczak, who earlier this year was named the founding dean of the new College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Grand Valley State University in Michigan.
CLAS Dean Linda Maxson said Dettmer's proven leadership in a wide range of roles within CLAS will make her an asset to the dean's office.
"Helena is a tireless worker on behalf of faculty and students, an energetic leader, and an accomplished administrator," Maxson said.
Dettmer served as chair of the classics department from 1993 to 2001, and as interim chair of French and Italian in 1998-99, before being selected as founding director of Interdisciplinary Programs in 2001. She has twice been elected to the college's executive committee and has served on the college's advisory committee on promotion and tenure. She is currently a member of the UI's Year of the Arts and Humanities Advisory Committee and of the Vice President for Research Review Committee for Collaborative Interdisciplinary Research Projects. She has received the UI's Faculty Scholar Award and May Brodbeck Award.
