Holden Cancer Center Receives American Cancer Society Grant Renewal

The Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Iowa has received a three-year, $427,500 Institutional Research Grant from the American Cancer Society (ACS).

The grant, which renews 27 consecutive years of the ACS Institutional Research Grant, will provide $142,500 of annual support for three years, beginning Jan. 1, 2005.

The funding will provide research support to beginning investigators at the UI for pilot projects in basic, clinical or psychosocial and behavioral cancer research. The award also includes a yearly stipend of $2,500 to introduce a medical student or graduate student in the professional health sciences to cancer research and the possibilities of a career in this field. 

The grant's principal investigator is George Weiner, M.D., director of the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center at the UI, the C.E. Block Chair of Cancer Research and professor of internal medicine in the UI Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine.
