Coleman Urges UI Law Graduates To Export Rule Of Law
University of Iowa College of Law graduates should work to export the rule of law to make the world safer and more stable, U.S. Senator Norm Coleman said at law school commencement exercises on Saturday.
"My advice is to become full-fledged ambassadors to the rule of law, the belief that justice can be arrived at through negotiation, discussion and advocacy," said Coleman, a U.S. Senator from Minnesota and a 1976 graduate of the UI College of Law. "We must demonstrate violence and intimidation and fighting it out in the media do not solve problems."
Coleman pointed out that of all the countries in the world, their stability and economic strength is not determined by their natural resources, history, culture, or any other similar factor. Instead, the one constant factor is a nation's adherence to the rule of law.
"The nations of freedom and justice are the nations that follow the rule of law," he said. "The more nations that adopt the rule of law, the better we'll all be."
Coleman is a 1976 graduate of the UI College of Law. Following graduation, he worked as an assistant attorney general in Minnesota and served two terms as mayor of St. Paul before being elected to the senate in 2002.
Coleman also received a Distinguished Alumni medallion from the UI Alumni Association during the ceremony.
About 200 graduates received their law degrees at the ceremony, and nine received their Master's of Laws degrees. The ceremony was the 28th and final presided over by N. William Hines, who is stepping down as dean of the law school next month.
"A lot of people have been asking if I've been feeling nostalgic as this day approaches, and the short answer is no, I'm not," he said. "These commencement exercises are the biggest day in the life of the law school and one of my most favorite events, so I will miss convening it. But having to make sure it comes off every year, I'm not going to miss that."
