International Programs Celebrates Achievements Of Faculty, Staff, Students
University of Iowa President David J. Skorton praised more than 300 International Programs faculty, staff and students for their achievements in international education during the first International Programs awards celebration April 29 in the International Center Lounge.
"We are celebrating the excellent work and superb accomplishments of those individuals who have made our International Programs achieve excellence," Skorton said. "Today, we celebrate all of these things-our global community, the place of the university in that community in all of our lives, and the programs that make it possible for the UI to have a meaningful place in the international arena."
During the event, faculty members were honored for receiving awards ranging from the Global Scholar and International Programs Major Project Development Awards to very competitive national and international external awards such as Fulbright Research Fellowships and National Endowment for the Arts grants, only to name a few.
Students were honored for receiving prestigious awards such as the Stanley Fellowships and Scholarships, Fulbright Grants and UI Presidential Awards for Study Abroad - all awards that enable UI students to study abroad or to conduct international research.
"Preparing students to work and live together humanely and effectively in a global environment is central to the educational mission at the University of Iowa," Skorton said, "And it is central to a more tolerant, peaceful, cohesive world."
International Programs contributors were also honored for their generous support of international education at the UI.
William M. Reisinger, associate provost of academic programs and dean of International Programs, said, "It is a pleasure to bring together our bright and adventurous students, talented staff and faculty members and generous supporters. They really are partners in pursuing the vital goals that President Skorton noted, and I am impressed by all their accomplishments."
