Psychiatry Professor Awarded Grant To Research Anxiety

The Anxiety Disorders Association of America (ADAA) has awarded a Junior Faculty Research Grant to John Wemmie, M.D., Ph.D., assistant professor of psychiatry in the University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine.

Wemmie, who is also a staff physician and researcher with the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Iowa City, will use the $30,000 grant to continue his research on anxiety.

"These grants aim to assist individuals making the transition from trainee to junior faculty to independent investigator," said Jane Caroline Parham, ADAA program manager.

Wemmie's research focuses primarily on a family of proteins called acid-sensing ion channels (ASICs). These proteins are located on the surface of neurons and may play an important role in anxiety. Wemmie and colleagues explore the role of these cells and their relationship to anxiety in animal models and how that might relate to human experience of anxiety.

"I feel particularly honored by this grant," Wemmie said. "There are only two recipients each year, and it is quite competitive."

The ADAA is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to promote the prevention, treatment and cure of anxiety disorders and to improve the lives of all people with such disorders. Since 1980, the ADAA has disseminated information, linked people who need treatment with those who can provide it and advocated for cost-effective treatments, benefiting hundreds of thousands of individuals. The association includes professionals who conduct research and treat anxiety disorders and individuals who have a personal or general interest in learning more about such disorders.
