American Studies Will Offer Short Takes On 'American Tableaux' April 9

The University of Iowa American Studies department will present "UI American Studies: Short Takes on 'American Tableaux'" at 2:30 p.m. Friday, April 9 in the University of Iowa Museum of Art (UIMA).

The program will feature UI faculty members presenting a series of short lectures inspired by the exhibition "American Tableaux: Selections from the Collection of Walker Art Center," on display at the UIMA. A reception will follow the program.

The lectures and reception are free and open to the public. Refreshments will be provided.

Presenters will explore the concept behind the works in the "American Tableaux" exhibition and attempt to define the "American" experience.

UI faculty members participating in the program will be: Jane Desmond, Lauren Rabinovitz, John Raeburn and Nick Yablon from the American Studies department; Kim Marra from the Department of Theatre Arts; and Laura Rigal from the English department.

"American Tableaux" is on display at the UIMA through April 25. The exhibition includes works by 55 20th-century American artists including Georgia O'Keeffe, David Hockney, Tom Wesselman and Kara Walker. Sixty-two paintings, sculptures, installations, prints and photographs are featured in the collection on loan from the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis.

"American Tableaux" was organized by Walker Art Center, Minneapolis. It is made possible by support from the Dain Rauscher Foundation and Marshall Field's Project Imagine.

The UI Museum of Art, located on North Riverside Drive in Iowa City, is open noon to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday, and noon to 9 p.m. Thursday and Friday. Admission is free. Public metered parking is available in UI parking lots west and north of the museum.
