UI, Cedar Falls Firm Win National Advertising Awards

The University of Iowa and an Iowa-based advertising agency, working in partnership, have won two national advertising awards.

A television ad produced by Cedar Falls-based Mathis, Earnest & Vandeventer (ME&V) for the UI Office of Admissions scored top honors in two categories in the 19th Annual Admissions Advertising Awards Competition sponsored by Admissions Marketing Report.

The UI and ME&V received gold awards in both the single TV ad category and the total series TV ads category for "Personal Best," a series of 30-second recruitment commercials airing across the state as part of a nationwide recruitment campaign.

"The world of college admissions is a tough battlefield," said Michael Barron, UI director of admissions. "We were looking for an advertising piece that could capture Iowa's unique spirit while telling prospective students that they could find their 'personal best' right here in Iowa. We were thrilled with the ME&V piece, and obviously the judges were as well."

The UI and ME&V competed against other universities across the country with enrollments of 20,000 or more. Silver, bronze and merit awards were given to other universities including DePaul, University of Louisville and University of Kentucky.

Admissions Marketing Report is a monthly magazine that covers the rapidly changing and competitive admissions marketing field. A panel of marketing, advertising and academic professionals evaluated each entry submitted in the 19th Annual Admissions Advertising Awards Competition against other entries in the same group and category. Judges based their decisions on overall creativity of the piece, marketing execution and impact of message.
