Student Incentive Program In Session On UI Campus
The University of Iowa's Opportunity at Iowa program is sponsoring a two-week Student Incentive Program (SIP) summer program designed for incoming pre-business and engineering students.
Developed by Nancy Humbles of Opportunity at Iowa, SIP is designed to provide the students with the tools needed to succeed in the challenging coursework required in the UI Colleges of Business and Engineering. The program began June 19.
The SIP program has an intensive mathematics component and an oral and written communication component. Classes, taught by faculty from the Colleges of Business and Engineering, are held every day from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and include topics such as marketing, finance, entrepreneurship, mathematics, economics, writing, and accounting. Participants also spend time in a computer lab where they get exposure to software programs and web sites they will encounter as a student. In addition, a student panel provides insight into how to be a successful student at the UI.
Staff from Opportunity at Iowa, Office of Admissions, Career Center, Business Library and Support Service Programs give one-hour presentations to expose the students to the services available on campus.
The Henry B. Tippie College of Business and the College of Engineering are committed to diversity and provide assistance to ensure that minority and first-generation college students achieve academic success. Therefore, the program doesn't end when the two weeks are up. The SIP students continue to receive ongoing support after they begin the school year.
Price-Waterhouse Cooper, John Deere, Opportunity at Iowa, The Henry B. Tippie College of Business, and the College of Engineering provide support to this program, allowing the cost to students to be only $100, including housing and meals. This is SIP's second year.
"This program has been very successful, and we plan to expand as much as possible in the years ahead," Humbles said.
