University Of Iowa To Recommend Applicants Take ACT Writing Test
The University of Iowa will recommend that applicants for admission to the university in Fall 2006 who take the ACT college entrance exam complete the optional writing portion of the test.
The ACT will begin offering the writing sample in Spring 2005. ACT developed its writing test based upon the results of a National Curriculum Survey conducted with college instructors and high school teachers across the country. The test will measure the writing skills deemed necessary for incoming college students. Almost all UI applicants submit ACT scores.
The Department of Rhetoric in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the UI participated in a validity study with ACT in the fall of 2003. In all, some 2,700 UI students enrolled in one of several courses for first-year students submitted writing samples to ACT. Rhetoric courses are required of all students entering the UI.
Writing will be part of every SAT in March 2005, and thereafter. Any SAT score submitted to the UI will automatically meet the university’s recommendation about writing.
