Gurney's ‘Love Letters’ Features John & Sandra Hudson July 18

John and Sandra Hudson, well-known Iowa City cultural activists, will perform A.R. Gurney's "Love Letters," part of Iowa Summer Rep's Festival of Gurney comedies, at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 18, in Theatre B of the University of Iowa Theatre Building.

The Hudsons retired to Iowa City after living for 45 years in Cambridge, Mass., and the vibrant cultural life of the community was a major factor in their decision. Upon their arrival six years ago they jumped into Iowa City's cultural life with both feet: They have volunteered for nearly 20 organizations and were the founders of the Cultural Incubator.

The Iowa Summer Rep performance of "Love Letters" is being described as a "reading," but actually all performances of Gurney's most popular play could be described the same way. The play consists of a middle-aged couple -- a staid lawyer and a lively, unpredictable artist -- reading years of correspondence. Through the letters, and from what remains unsaid, a vivid portrait of their bittersweet relationship emerges.

All tickets for "Love Letters" are $5, and can be purchased in advance from the Hancher Auditorium box office. In the unlikely event that any tickets remain, they will be available at the Theatre Building an hour before curtain time.

"Love Letters" has been performed frequently since its premiere 15 years ago, often starring local celebrities. The Iowa Summer Rep performance is directed by William Barbour.

Hancher Auditorium summer box office business hours are 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m. weekdays. From the local calling area, dial 319-335-1160. Long distance is toll-free, 1-800-HANCHER. Fax to 319-353-2284.
