Afifi To Speak On Peace, War In Lebanon March 1

Larry Anna Afifi a retired nursing manager at the University of Iowa Student Health Services, will speak about, "Living Under Peace and War in Lebanon," Monday, March 1, from noon to 1 p.m. in the International Center Lounge, the next lecture in the International Mondays series. The lecture is free and open to the public, and refreshments will be served.

The discussion will focus on life in peace and war in Lebanon and the Arab world, what the Arabs are really like and the change in perception towards the United States.

Afifi earned her nursing degree from the American University of Beirut in Lebanon. She later obtained her doctorate in education and instructional design from the University of Iowa. Afifi has lived and worked mostly in Lebanon, but has also worked in Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Palestine. Since 1984, Afifi and her husband have lived and worked in Iowa City, where she recently retired from the nurse manager position at Student Health Services. She continues to return to Lebanon for two to four months a year.

The International Mondays series is sponsored by UI International Programs and the Stanley-UI Foundation Support Organization and presents discussions with individuals who have had international experiences. The lectures are usually from noon to 1 p.m. every Monday in the International Center Lounge or other locations on campus throughout the academic year with the exception of holidays and breaks.

UI International Programs consists of a number of offices, centers, degree programs, academic programs, research projects and services. Organized under the associate provost for academic programs and dean of international programs, these units serve to further internationalize the campus and the community and promote global scholarship, research and teaching.
