Russian Writer To Speak At International Mondays Feb. 16

Victoria Fomina, University of Iowa International Programs writer-in-residence, will speak on "Freedom and Restriction in Literature," on Monday, Feb. 16, the first International Mondays presentation of the spring semester. The discussion runs from noon to 1 p.m., in the International Center Lounge and is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be provided.

Fomina is an award-winning Russian fiction writer whose short stories have been translated into Italian and German and are included in a recent German anthology of the best prose by young Russian writers. Her work has appeared in prestigious Russian journals, including "Znamya", "Druzhba Narodov", "Vremya", "My", and "Strelets".

Fomina was educated at the Moscow Literary University and the Moscow Art Theater Institute. She currently works as an editor at the established Moscow publishing house, Limbus Press. She is a member of the Union of Writers of Moscow. She is visiting the UI through April 1.

The International Mondays series is sponsored by UI International Programs and the Stanley-UI Foundation Support Organization and presents discussions with individuals who have had international experiences. The lectures are usually from noon to 1 p.m. every Monday in the International Center Lounge or other locations on campus throughout the academic year with the exception of holidays and breaks.

UI International Programs consists of a number of offices, centers, degree programs, academic programs, research projects and services. Organized under the associate provost for academic programs and dean of international programs, these units serve to further internationalize the campus and the community and promote global scholarship, research and teaching.
