Former CIA Iraq Expert To Discuss Iraq Intelligence With Rowley At UI

Raymond L. McGovern, a former CIA analyst and Iraq intelligence expert, will discuss intelligence and the Iraq war at the University of Iowa at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 22 in the Main Lounge of the Iowa Memorial Union.

He will share the stage with Coleen Rowley, who will discuss national security and the Patriot Act. A question-and-answer session will follow their lectures. Admission is free and open to the public.

McGovern said the director of the CIA and the chief U.S. weapons inspector have offered very different explanations as to why no weapons of mass destruction have been found in Iraq. He will discuss the role of intelligence before the war and the various explanations that are being provided now in an effort to help the normal citizen deduce who is telling the truth.

McGovern had access to the highest levels of power during his 27-year CIA career, WHICH spanned the presidencies of John F. Kennedy and George H.W. Bush. His responsibilities at the CIA included chairing National Intelligence Estimates and preparing the President's Daily Brief (PDB). These, the most authoritative genres of intelligence reporting, have been alluded to in recent press reports on intelligence prior to the war in Iraq and also on what the president was told before 9/11. During the Reagan Administration in the mid-1980s, Ray was one of the senior analysts conducting early morning briefings of the PDB one-on-one with the vice president, the secretaries of State and Defense, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the assistant to the president for national security affairs.

Following his retirement from CIA, McGovern began a career in non-profit administration. He is now co-director of the Servant Leadership School, which trains and supports people who wish to help the poor. The school is one of a dozen Jubilee Ministries, which were inspired by the ecumenical Church of the Saviour and took root in inner city Washington, DC.

NOTE TO EDITORS: McGovern will also participate in the telephone press conference call with Coleen Rowley on Monday, Feb. 16, at 2 p.m. in the Hoover Room on the second floor of the Iowa Memorial Union. All media are invited to attend.
