Local Student Will Attend Honor Band Weekend At UI Feb. 21-22
Students from (hometown) are among 100 student musicians from 31 Iowa high
schools selected to play in the 2004 Iowa Honor Band at the University of
Iowa School of Music.
The Iowa Honor Band will present a free concert at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb.
22 in Hancher Auditorium on the UI campus. The Sunday concert, under the
direction of guest conductor David A. Waybright, will conclude the students'
participation in the annual Honor Band Weekend at the UI.
(Year in school, name(s), instrument(s)), will represent (name of school)
at the festival.)
During the Honor Band Weekend, students attend rehearsals of the Honor Band
with the guest conductor and receive instruction on their instruments. They
also attend a concert by the UI Symphony Band, the top wind ensemble at the
UI School of Music, under UI Director of Bands Myron Welch. That concert,
at 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21 in Hancher Auditorium, is also free and open
to the public.
Honor Band members are chosen by the staff of the UI band department on
the basis of recommendations from their high school band directors, who are
invited to nominate their best musicians.
For its Feb. 22 concert, the Honor Band will perform Morten Lauridson's "O
Magnum Mysterium," "Dance of the Jesters" by Tchaikovsky, "The
Florentiner" march by Julius Fucik, Howard Hanson's "Chorale and
Alleluia" and "Danserye" by Renaissance composer Tilman Susato.
Waybright is director of bands at the University of Florida, where he is
also the head of the conducting area. He directs the wind symphony and supervises
the band program and the graduate and undergraduate conducting curricula.
He is in demand as a guest conductor and clinician with wind bands, orchestras
and choirs, and has appeared in that capacity in more than 30 states, throughout
Europe and in Australia.
Waybright received his bachelor's and master's degrees at Marshall University
and a doctorate in orchestral conducting from the Cincinnati College-Conservatory
of Music. He has taught at Wahama High School in Mason, W.V., served as director
of bands at Ferrum College and Plymouth State College, and as director of
bands and orchestra at McNeese State University.
Waybright is an elected member of the American Bandmasters Association and
a lifetime member of the World Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles.
He is also a member of the College Band Director's National Association,
the Music Educators National Convention and the Florida Music Educators Association.
Ensembles under his direction have performed invited concerts at conferences
sponsored by all of those organizations.
