Women's Center Offers Groups For Readers And Artists

The Women's Resource and Action Center (WRAC) at the University of Iowa announces three groups being offered this fall for readers and artists.

The Feminist Fiction Reading Group will offer participants the opportunity to discuss feminism in fiction novels. Four novels have been selected for the fall semester, and the group will meet once a month, beginning Sept. 15, to discuss each book in turn.  Meeting dates and books to be discussed are:

- Wednesday, Sept. 15 at 8 p.m. - "You Can't Keep a Good Woman Down" by Alice Walker

- Wednesday, Oct. 13 at 8 p.m. - "The Well of Loneliness" by Radclyffe Hall

- Wednesday, Nov. 17 at 8 p.m. - "The Female Man" by Johanna Russ

- Wednesday, Dec. 8 at 8 p.m. - "Rape: A Love Story" by Joyce Carol Oates

All meetings will take place at WRAC, 130 N. Madison St. in Iowa City and are open to the public. No pre-registration is required and participants may come to any or all meetings of their choosing.

The Lesbian Reading Group is designed to offer lesbians a safe, comfortable environment to have interesting, thought-provoking discussions about good books. The goals of the group are to empower lesbian women to learn from each other, and to provide a sense of community among participants. The group will meet at WRAC on Thursday evenings (every third week) at 7 p.m. Pre-registration is required, and participants must register no later than Sept. 6.

The Feminist Art Circle is designed to provide an open forum for women to share the creative process. All mediums and abilities are welcome. Group activities will including sharing resources, field trips and workshops, and will culminate in an open house at the end of the semester. The group will meet at WRAC on Thursdays at 5:30 p.m. beginning Sept. 9. No pre-registration is required, and participants may join at any time.

There is no charge for participation in any of these groups, but there is a suggested donation of $10 for the entire run of the group. Space can be limited, so call the Women's Resource & Action Center at 319-335-1486 now to sign up.
