University of Iowa News Release

Aug. 25, 2004

Major UI Facilities Unit Changes Name

A major service unit on the University of Iowa campus is changing its name. After Sept. 1, Facilities Services Group will be known as Facilities Management.

The unit, which employs more than 600 staff, is responsible for the planning, construction, operation and maintenance of general fund-supported academic and administrative support buildings, most campus grounds, and all utility systems.

In addition to this name change, two units in the organization will implement name changes effective Sept. 1. The Department of Planning will be renamed Campus & Facilities Planning, and Utilities will change to Utilities & Energy Management.

To keep costs associated with the change to a minimum, the new name and its associated logo will be phased in over the next several years, as branded supplies need replenishing, and uniforms, vehicles and business cards need replacing.

Facilities Management and its departments will keep the same telephone numbers and addresses.

"Changing a name is serious business," said Don Guckert, associate vice president and director of facilities. "We are moving toward being an organization with an integrated, comprehensive approach to planning, building, operating, and servicing the special places that support the academic mission of the University of Iowa."
