MEDIA ADVISORY: Medicine, Pharmacy White Coat Ceremonies Aug. 20 & 21
WHAT: White Coat Ceremonies for incoming University of Iowa medical and pharmacy students
WHEN/WHERE: UI Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine: 3 p.m. Friday, Aug. 20, at Clapp Recital Hall
UI College of Pharmacy: 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 21, in the Main Lounge of the Iowa Memorial Union
The White Coat Ceremonies at the UI Carver College of Medicine and the UI College of Pharmacy are events that welcome new students to the colleges.
At the UI College of Medicine White Coat Ceremony, John Lawrence, M.D., associate professor (clinical) of surgery, will deliver an address to the students titled, "Ten Things I Think I Think - On Becoming a Physician." Following Lawrence's speech, the medical students will be ceremonially cloaked with their first white laboratory coats. Then, in the presence of family, friends and faculty, they will recite the Oath of Hippocrates.
At the UI College of Pharmacy White Coat Ceremony, Gene Lutz of Altoona, president-elect of the American Pharmacists Association, will address the students. Helen Eddy of West Des Moines, director of pharmacy education and training for Hy-Vee and president of the UI College of Pharmacy Alumni Board, will welcome the new students to the profession. After receiving their white laboratory coats and name badges, the students will recite the Oath of a Pharmacist. Following a short reception at the IMU, current students will host a picnic at City Park, providing an opportunity for faculty, staff and students to meet the students and their parents.
