Iowa State Fair Promises Funnel Cakes, Butter Cow - and Herky!
The 2004 Iowa State Fair kicks off Thursday, Aug. 12, and the University of Iowa will be on hand to help make sure that it's one of the best fairs ever.
On opening day the UI booth will feature three-time Hawkeye basketball team Most Valuable Player (MVP) Jess Settles, exhibits on UI International Programs and The Mobile Clinic and drawings for tickets to the upcoming Iowa-Kent State football game as well as other great prizes.
Throughout the fair, which runs Aug. 12-22, the UI will offer a wide variety of exciting exhibits, presentations, visits by special guests (including Herky and the UI cheerleading and dance teams), free posters and temporary tattoos and daily drawings for free Iowa tickets, merchandise and more. This year's booth theme, as last year, is "Iowa: Your University."
The Iowa booth is located in the southwest corner of the Varied Industries Building.
The schedule for Thursday, Aug. 12 is as follows:
* 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. International Programs: Your Window on the World (sponsored by UI International Programs). International students, wearing traditional attire, will interact with visitors, write guests' names in different alphabets using calligraphy, and create mehndi, beadwork and other art representative of various cultures that visitors can take with them. Staff members will be on hand to offer visitors temporary tattoos of Chinese characters and answer questions regarding international education issues.
* 3 to 5 p.m. - Jess Settles. Settles, who played basketball for the Hawkeyes from 1994-1999, ranks in the Top 10 in more career statistical categories than any player in Iowa history and was named team MVP three times. Iowa's only Big 10 Freshman of the Year, Settles was an Academic All-American and three-time winner of the prestigious Chris Street Award. A native of southeast Iowa, Settles is the author of "The Next Level: Jess Settles on Maximizing Potential," and he operates The Next Level Christian Basketball Camps.
* 3 to 8 p.m. - The Mobile Clinic (sponsored by the University of Iowa's Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine). Visitors can view preserved body parts and anatomical models and take advantage of free preventive medicine screenings such as blood pressure checks and blood glucose checks.
* End of day -- Drawing for daily prizes, which include Iowa vs. Kent State football tickets; Touchdown Iowa Highlight Video (two drawings); Brad Banks Heisman DVD; Hawkeye T-shirt; Hawkeye cap; Alumni T-shirt; Squeeze Herky; Alumni Association Football Calendar; and Alumni Association Pen/Pencil Set and Calculator.
