UI Dance Marathon Hosted A Day At Adventureland
The University of Iowa Dance Marathon hosted a day at Adventureland for families sponsored by Dance Marathon on July 10 in Des Moines.
Nearly 500 family members and university students from both the UI and Iowa State University attended the event. Everyone enjoyed a barbeque picnic lunch on the Adventureland grounds and a pizza and pop dinner before departing.
"The rain stayed away leaving us with warm weather, perfect for enjoying water rides and drying off on roller coasters as many of the students and families chose to do," said Erin Northway, Dance Marathon family programming director. "Overall everyone had a great time, and it remains one of our favorite family events."
The annual Dance Marathon, held in February, raises funds through corporate donations, in-kind gifts and independent donors. Dancers remain on their feet without caffeine or watches for the entire 24 hours, dancing the night away. Seasonal events, such as the summer event at Adventureland, bring sponsored families together with UI Dance Marathon participants, providing a great opportunity for students and families to get to know each other outside of a hospital setting.
The mission of UI Dance Marathon is to provide financial and emotional support through special projects to families served by Children's Hospital of Iowa at UI Hospitals and Clinics with an emphasis on pediatric oncology. UI Dance Marathon is the largest Children's Miracle Network Dance Marathon organization in the United States and is the UI's largest student-run philanthropic event. UI Dance Marathon has raised more than $2.8 million since 1995.
