High School Journalists To Attend IHSPA Conferences

The University of Iowa will host more than 500 high school journalists Wednesday, Oct. 8, during the Iowa High School Press Association's annual Fall State Conference in the Iowa Memorial Union. The conference, "50 Ways to Learn It, Live It, Love It," is sponsored by the UI School of Journalism and Mass Communication.

Students staffing their schools' newspapers, yearbooks, broadcast and web programs will attend conference sessions addressing a variety of topics related to journalism. The conference will also include standard events, such as an Advisers' Luncheon and on-site writing and photography contests and critiques for the students.

Featured guests include Lyle Muller, investigations/special projects editor of The Gazette; Charles Apple, graphics editor of the Des Moines Register; and Jim Lewers, managing editor of the Iowa City Press-Citizen. Other speakers include media professionals from the Des Moines Register, Iowa City Press-Citizen, KCRG-TV, The Gazette and the Quad Cities Times, staff members of the Daily Iowan student newspaper at the UI, high school journalism students and their teachers, and faculty from the UI School of Journalism and Mass Communication.

IHSPA also will hold its annual Fall Regional Conference in Des Moines on Wednesday, Oct. 22, at Drake University. Media professionals from Des Moines and Eastern Iowa, as well as high school journalism students and their teachers, and Drake University School of Journalism faculty, will present sessions throughout the day.

Registration for both the conferences begins at 8:15 a.m. on their respective days, with the welcoming ceremonies starting at 8:45 a.m. and breakout sessions at 9 a.m. Both conferences will conclude at 3 p.m., following an awards ceremony honoring the winners of various high school journalism contests as well as the 2003 recipients of the Stratton and Vahl education awards. In addition, IHSPA members will cast ballots at each site for the organization's president and secretary.

The fee to attend the conferences is $15 if pre-registered by Oct. 1 and $20 at the door, with a limited number of scholarships available to students who need them.
