UI Administrators Selected To Serve On Iowa Learns Council
Three University of Iowa professors and administrators have been selected to serve on the Iowa Learns Council, a new advisory body aimed at improving education for all Iowans.
They are: Patricia Cain, interim provost and professor of law; Nicholas Colangelo, Myron and Jacqueline Blank Professor of Gifted Education and director of The Connie Belin & Jacqueline N. Blank International Center for Gifted Education and Talent Development; and William Decker, UI interim vice president for research.
The council, announced Sept. 25 by Gov. Tom Vilsack, is designed to bring together statewide educational leaders to examine Iowa's education system from preschool through post-secondary education. The council will recommend strategies for greater coordination among education sectors to better prepare students and Iowa's workforce.
In addition to the three UI members, the 38-member council includes two faculty and staff from Iowa State University and two from the University of Northern Iowa. Also, Gregory Nichols, executive director of the Board of Regents, State of Iowa and several board staff will be actively involved in supporting the council's work, along with staff of the Iowa Department of Education, Iowa Department of Economic Development, Iowa Workforce Development, and Iowa's Community Empowerment Board.
The Iowa Learns Council plans to work toward achieving two primary goals: that 90 percent of Iowa children will have a quality preschool experience, and 90 percent of Iowa high school graduates will complete at least two years of college.
The Board of Regents, State of Iowa is a group of nine citizen volunteers who govern the state's three public universities and two special K-12 schools -- the Iowa School for the Deaf and the Iowa Braille and Sight Saving School -- through policymaking, coordination, and oversight.
