UI To Offer Fasttrac Training Program For Entrepreneurs

The John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center and Small Business Development Center at the University of Iowa will offer the FastTrac NewVenture training program this fall.

The seven-week program will be offered from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Oct. 14 through Nov. 25 in Iowa City.

The FastTrac NewVenture training program is designed to help aspiring entrepreneurs evaluate business opportunities and develop a plan for successfully starting a new business.

"Aspiring entrepreneurs who complete this course will have developed the skills necessary to properly evaluate a business opportunity and leave with a written plan for launching their new venture. They will also come away with an understanding of funding options that are available to them," said David Hensley, director of the John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center.

Specific topics covered in the program include opportunity recognition, market research and analysis, market penetration, pricing, financial projections, cash flow management, and sources of financing.

During each session, participants will learn from experienced entrepreneurs and educators. In addition, local business experts will share their experiences and knowledge with the class. Participants will be able to network with other aspiring entrepreneurs and work on their business plans.

Local business owners who have completed this course have found it indispensable. "I had never seen a business plan before - the course enabled me to understand it very clearly." says Kathleen Rash owner of The Art Mission in downtown Iowa City. "I highly recommend the program to others."

FastTrac NewVenture normally costs $249, but the UI is able to offer the program at the reduced rate of $99, thanks to a grant from the Kauffman Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership at the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation. The $99 fee includes tuition, course materials, business planning software CD-ROM, and one-on-one mentoring.

Enrollment is limited. To register or for more information, contact Carolyn Norton at the John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center at 319-335-1022.
