Author Dave Eggers To Appear At UI
Dave Eggers, hailed by The New York Times as one of America's best young authors, will speak at the University of Iowa at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 21, in the Main Lounge in the Iowa Memorial Union.
Admission to "An Evening with Dave Eggers" is free and open to the public.
Eggers is the author of two bestselling books, "A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius" and "You Shall Know Our Velocity." He is also the editor/publisher of McSweeney's, a quarterly literary journal. His writing is known for its wit, irony and self-deprecating humor.
"A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius" is Eggers' often funny, often painful account of raising his younger brother after the near simultaneous deaths of their parents. "You Shall Know Our Velocity" traces the adventures of two working-class friends desperately trying to give away money during a trip around the world. As they do, they discover how difficult, and funny, charity can be.
Eggers also owns McSweeney's Books publishing house and is founder of 826 Valencia, a San Francisco writing lab that helps Bay Area youth improve their writing skills.
His lectures have run the gamut from academically serious to absurdly humorous. Often experimenting with his audience, Eggers has used his lectures for community haiku writing sessions, mass discussions on contemporary literature and an outlet for off-the-cuff artistry.
Eggers' appearance is sponsored by the University Lecture Committee. Individuals with disabilities are encouraged to attend all UI-sponsored events. If you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation in order to participate in this program, please contact the UI Lecture Committee at 319-335-3255.
