UI Health Care Physician Receives Prestigious Fellowship

A University of Iowa Health Care physician recently received a prestigious fellowship to travel to Australia and New Zealand to exchange surgical scientific information with colleagues in those nations.

Joseph Cullen, M.D., associate professor of surgery in the UI Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and chief of the Surgical Service at the Iowa City Veterans Affairs Medical Center, won the fellowship for 2004. The Australia and New Zealand Chapter of the American College of Surgeons awards its $12,000 Traveling Fellowship to just one North American surgeon annually.

"I am deeply honored to receive this opportunity and I am certainly looking forward to meeting my colleagues 'Down Under,'" said Cullen, who is a member of the gastrointestinal surgery staff at UI Hospitals and Clinics.

During the fellowship, Cullen will spend several weeks visiting medical centers in Australia and New Zealand. He will also attend the annual Scientific Congress of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in Melbourne, Australia, May 2-7, 2004.

The American College of Surgeons (ACS) is a scientific and educational association of surgeons that was founded in 1913 to improve the quality of care for the surgical patient by setting high standards for surgical education and practice.

The ACS currently has more than 64,000 fellows, including more than 3,700 fellows in other countries, making it the largest organization of surgeons in the world. There are presently more than 5,000 associate fellows in the ACS.
