UI Parents Association Makes $100,000 Gift For New Pomerantz Center

The University of Iowa Parents Association has made a $100,000 gift commitment to the UI Foundation for the new Pomerantz Center, a comprehensive facility that will provide a breadth of academic, career and recruiting resources for prospective and current students and alumni.

This commitment, which comes from private gifts made to the Parent Fund for Student Support, will help fund the $17.6 million building, which is scheduled to open in 2005.

In recognition for the gift, the reception area in the UI Admissions Visitors Center will be named for the Parents Association.

"We wanted this contribution to be a living legacy -- a gift for other parents and students, who will use the Pomerantz Center in years to come," said Darlene Schaller, interim president of the Parents Association board. "It just seemed fitting to invest in a place that will touch the lives of so many UI students throughout their time on campus."

Funded in part by a $10 million lead gift from Marvin A. and Rose Lee Pomerantz of Des Moines, the 70,000-square-foot Pomerantz Center is now under construction across from the John Pappajohn Business Building at the corner of Market Street and the T. Anne Cleary Walkway, in the heart of the UI campus.

The facility mainly will serve students in the UI's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and Henry B. Tippie College of Business. In addition to the Admissions Visitors Center, it also will house a variety of career-related student services, including the Marvin A. and Rose Lee Pomerantz Career Services Program, MBA Career Services, the Executive MBA Program, the UI Alumni Association's Career Information Network and the Academic Advising Center.

"The Admissions Visitors Center will help shape prospective students' and parents' first impressions of the University of Iowa, and that's what makes this gift so meaningful," said Phillip Jones, UI vice president for student services. "It shows that parents of current UI students believe in the quality of this university enough to invest in its future."

The UI Parents Association gift is part of the UI's $850 million comprehensive campaign, which will run through 2005 and is being conducted under the guidance of the UI Foundation. Named "Good. Better. Best. Iowa: The Campaign to Advance Our Great University," the seven-year effort is raising private funds to help launch a variety of initiatives across the university, substantially increase the number of UI scholarships and endowed faculty positions, support new educational and research facilities, build the UI's endowment and fund outreach and service programs to benefit Iowans.

The UI Foundation is acknowledged by the UI as a preferred channel for private contributions that benefit all areas of the university. For more information about the "Good. Better. Best. Iowa" campaign, visit its web site at
