Tippie College Ranks High In Research Productivity
In a new study of research productivity among top business schools, the Henry B. Tippie College of Business ranked high for its research in four academic disciplines. The Tippie College ranked eighth in organizational behavior, 15th in accounting, 20th in marketing, 21st in economics and 24th in management science.
In their study, "Business Research in Eight Disciplines," Roy D. Adler of Pepperdine University and Larry M. Robinson of Rice University analyzed lifetime research citations of 4,918 full-time faculty members with doctoral degrees at 51 leading U.S. business schools. The schools in the study had been included at least once in the top 30 ranking lists produced by Business Week, U.S. News & World Report or the Financial Times from 1988 to 2003.
"The authors measure a publication's importance and impact by counting the number of times it has been used by other scholars in their research -I n other words, by looking at research citations. If a piece of scholarship has influenced the thinking of subsequent authors to the extent that they cite it in their own work, it is considered to be important. By counting all of the citations for each scholar-author in the study, Adler and Pepperdine acquire a measure of the overall impact of that scholar's research on his or her field," said Robert Forsythe, senior associate dean in the Tippie College of Business.
Adler and Robinson developed rankings in the disciplines of accounting, economics, finance, information systems, marketing, management science, organizational behavior and strategy. They gathered citations dating back to 1975 from the Social Science Citation Index which contains 1,700 scholarly journals and almost 1.5 million citations.
