Advanced Choreographic Design Concert 'Piece' Set For Dec. 11-13
The University of Iowa Dance Department will present "Piece," the fall Advanced Choreographic Design Concert, at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, Dec. 11-13, in the Space/Place Theatre of UI North Hall.
"Piece" is a collaboration among members of the Advanced Choreographic Design course, taught by faculty member Charlotte Adams.
The new work re-imagines the Celtic myth of the Daughters of Broddaugh, combining dance, painting, stagecraft, video, original music, hip-hop and spoken-word theater.
Examining relationships of women to violence, the extreme to the everyday, and destruction to renewal, the performance draws on ancient myths to reflect on current international and social conflicts.
"Piece" considers how humans might create their own fate, and depicts what culture critic Edward Said called "constructing of fields of coexistence rather than fields of battle."
Advanced Choreographic Design is a class designed to bring together advanced artists from a variety of disciplines for the purpose of creating an environment for artistic collaboration, culminating in a final "dance" performance at Space/Place Theater. Students from the disciplines of dance, theatre, music, art, film and composition share ideas and knowledge to collaborate on a multi-media work incorporating the different arts languages.
Admission will be $10 ($5 for UI students and free to children 12 and younger).
Tickets are available in advance from the University Box Office in the Iowa Memorial Union, 319-335-3041 or toll-free 800-346-4401. The fax number is 319-335-3407. Hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 5-9 p.m. Sunday.
