Geist Named UI Carver College Of Medicine Associate Dean
Lois J. Geist, M.D., has been named associate dean for faculty affairs in the University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine.
Geist's appointment is effective Nov. 17. She replaces Susan Johnson, M.D., who stepped down from the position earlier this semester. Johnson had held the position since 1994.
Geist is an associate professor in the pulmonary, critical care and occupational medicine division of the UI Department of Internal Medicine, and she has served as the department's associate chair for faculty affairs. Geist also is chief of medical services at the Iowa City Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
"I am delighted Dr. Geist has accepted this key administrative position," said Jean Robillard, M.D., dean of the UI Carver College of Medicine. "She brings outstanding leadership and experience to her new role and will be a wonderful advocate on behalf of our faculty. I look forward to working with her."
Geist earned her medical degree at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. She completed a residency in internal medicine at University Hospitals of Cleveland, followed by a fellowship in pulmonary diseases at UI Hospitals and Clinics. She joined the UI faculty as an assistant professor in 1991.
Her research interests include cytokine induction by viral gene products as a way to study inflammatory lung disease. Her clinical interests include pulmonary rehabilitation, clinical exercise testing and pulmonary disease in patients with compromised immune systems.
