Fifth Annual Mormon Trek Heritage Festival Set For June 7
The Mormon Trek Heritage Society of Iowa City, a recognized student organization at the University of Iowa, will sponsor the Fifth Annual Mormon Trek Heritage Festival from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, June 7 at the Hawkeye Intramural Fields on the UI campus. Free and open to the public, the event will feature three hours of live pioneer and bluegrass music performed by local talents Al and Aleta Murphy and the Drollingers.
The Hawkeye fields are adjacent to the University of Iowa's Mormon Handcart Park, just off Mormon Trek Blvd and Hawkeye Park Road. In addition to musical entertainment, an inexpensive barbecue dinner by Smokin' Joe's Barbecue will be available. Also, free activities, including pioneer games, toys and crafts, such as dolls and bonnets will be featured. Replica wooden handcarts will be provided for people to pull across a patch of Iowa prairie at the Handcart Park, and historical data, such as the names of pioneers and their descriptions of life on the trail will be shared.
For more information and a map to the Festival site, please see the Heritage Society's web site at: www.uiowa.edu/~handcart or contact Justin Schmid at 319-648-2059.
