UI Dance Department Presents Jeffery Bullock's "Black"
The University of Iowa Dance Department will present faculty member Jeffery Bullock's "Black" at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, March 27-29 in the Space/Place Theatre of UI North Hall.
"Black," a collaboration with director William Barbour, composer Michael Cash and playwright Anton Jones, combines dance, theater, music and video to explore the meaning of "black." The work will be performed by an 18-member company.
"I was inspired by the idea of trying to create a dance piece that embraced a wide range of movement exploration," Bullock explains. "The thesis begins with the idea of black as color -- broad in concept and actualized through abstract movement, and metaphorically represented by using images of space (milky way).
"As the work progresses, the notion of black as color gets reduced to a representation of racial identity."
The collaborators in Bullock's project represent all the units of the UI Division of Performing Arts -- dance, theater and music.
Bullock danced professionally with the Pacific Northwest Ballet, the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, the Hubbard Street Dance Company and the North Carolina Dance Theatre before doing graduate work at the UI. He is now an assistant professor in the Dance Department.
Barbour is a Master of Fine Arts student in the Department of Theatre Arts, where he directed the Iowa premiere of Tennessee Williams' "Spring Storm" and worked on a variety of Iowa New Play Festival and Gallery series productions. He was a founding member of the Minds Eye Puppet Theatre and is a two-time winner of the Los Angeles Dramalogue Awards.
Anton Jones, a recent graduate of Cornell College, is in his first year in the Iowa Playwrights Workshop. His "Genies in the Mountains" will be read at the Iowa Playwrights Festival this spring.
"The best part of this collaborative process has been the conversations I've had with the artists involved," Bullock says. "Our dialogues pushed ideas forward -- giving us opportunities to take risks and to speak our imagination."
The production features lighting by Gary Holmquist, who has designed more than 400 productions for the Dance Department during the last 20 years. He is also the resident lighting designer for Ballet Quad Cities. Bullock and Barbour designed the costumes.
Tickets for Jeffery Bullock's "Black" are $10 ($5 for UI students). Tickets may be purchased in advance from the University Box Office in the Iowa Memorial Union.
