Local Student(s) Will Attend Jazz Camp At University Of Iowa June 15-21

Seventy-two talented junior-high and high school students are scheduled to attend the All-State Jazz Camp June 15-21 at the University of Iowa School of Music.

Local students from (name of school) attending the camp are: (names, grades in school, and instruments).

All students attending the camp will participate in the final concert at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 21 in Clapp Recital Hall on the UI campus. The concert is free and open to the public.

The All-State Jazz Camp will give students opportunities to interact and perform with professional jazz musicians throughout a week of music making and listening. Areas of study will include jazz improvisation, jazz listening, jazz theory, master classes and combo performance. In addition to UI Jazz faculty members, professional jazz saxophonist/composer Kim Richmond will be the guest artists/clinician.

The jazz camp coordinator is John Rapson, head of the jazz area of the UI School of Music. The All-State Music Camp is sponsored by the UI School of Music and directed by Kevin Kastens, who also directs the UI Hawkeye Marching Band. Each camp offers a variety of musical experiences for talented young musicians who have completed grades 8-12. All participants were recommended by their school music teachers.

Rapson joined the faculty of the UI School of Music as director of jazz studies in August 1993. A recording artist for the Sound Aspects and Nine Winds labels, he is a composer and trombonist whose work mixes ethnic and experimental elements with more conventional jazz forms. His recent experimental jazz recording "Dances and Orations" has been hailed as "one of the most vital CDs to come around in a long time" in Jazziz and as "a conceptual and musical triumph" by Josef Woodard in the Independent. The CD scored 10 out of 10 for artistic merit in Grammophone magazine's "Good CD Guide" for jazz recordings, which also called it "beautiful and unique."

Previous albums under Rapson's direction are "Bing" for Sound Aspects, and "Buwah" and "Deeba dah bwee" for Nine Winds. He has also recorded "A Mingus Among Us" and "Been There, Done That" with Johnson County Landmark.

Richmond is an active and versatile musician based in the Los Angeles area. His first love is jazz, and his primary jazz voice is the alto saxophone. He has, however, been involved in nearly every facet of the professional music industry, both as a player and as a composer/arranger. His instruments are alto, soprano, tenor and baritone saxes, clarinet, bass clarinet, and flutes. Richmond has been a member of the orchestras of Stan Kenton, Louis Bellson, Bob Florence, Clare Fischer, Bill Holman, and Vinny Golia among others.

Richmond is a Selmer artist and endorses all Selmer saxophones and other woodwinds. In spite of his busy schedule in the professional music world, he enjoys keeping in touch with the educational music field by serving as guest lecturer, conductor and guest soloist at college music festivals and workshops around the country.

The School of Music is part of the Division of Performing Arts in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
