Statement By UI President David Skorton On Kelch Departure
"I offer my warmest congratulations and sincere thanks to Vice President Bob Kelch as he prepares to leave the University of Iowa and take the position of executive vice president for medical affairs at the University of Michigan. It is a tremendous opportunity for him professionally.
"Even as he moves to Ann Arbor, Bob Kelch leaves us with a legacy of contributions that are positive and substantial.
"It was Bob Kelch's vision that led to the revitalization of our academic health sciences campus. He directed the development of a superior medical education program that will better prepare our students to serve the health care needs of Iowans, and he pursued changes that were directly responsible for dramatic growth in the biomedical research enterprise. He vigorously and successfully advocated for public and private funds that are transforming our physical facilities and fostering 21st century research, education, and service. He also deserves credit for strengthening the critically interdependent relationship between the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and the UI Carver College of Medicine.
"Just as important, Vice President Kelch has always been an invaluable source of counsel, and a trusted friend and colleague as a member of the vice presidents group.
"To help us make the transition, I propose to implement the following changes in the structure of the central administration:
• The director and CEO of University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics will report directly to the president.
• The dean of the University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine will continue to report to the provost on all academic matters, but will report to the president with regard to the clinical partnership between the UI Carver College of Medicine and UI Hospitals and Clinics.
"Iowans are justly proud of what we do to ensure that they have access to health care that is the equal of any place in this country or the world. We are committed to maintaining and enhancing the momentum we have established in achieving our missions of teaching, research and service in the health care arena."
