UI Emeritus Professor Himie Voxman Receives National Award
Himie Voxman, former director of the University of Iowa School of Music and one of the UI's most distinguished emeritus faculty, has received the A. August Harding Award from the American School Band Directors Association at its annual meeting June 17-21 in Columbus, Ohio. The award is given for "valuable and dedicated service to the school bands of America."
Voxman, who continues to be active as a music educator, also presented a clinic on music teaching during the convention.
Voxman is among the UI's most honored faculty and administrators. A 1933 graduate of the university, he served as director of the UI School of Music from 1954 until his retirement in 1980. Among many other honors, the UI Music Building was named in his honor in 1995 and he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Clarinet Association in 2000.
Earlier this year, Voxman was named Lowell Mason Fellow of MENC: The National Association for Music Education, "in recognition of a significant and lasting contribution to music education." He has also received the 1983 Edwin Franko Goldman Citation of the American Bandmaster's Association, in recognition of his "conspicuous service in the interest of bands and band music in America"; the 1991 First-Place Award of Merit from the National Federation of State High School Music Associations; and the Medal of Honor from the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic.
The UI community helped celebrate Voxman's 90th birthday last fall with a series of concerts and a reunion for his many former students. Although he retired from the UI more than 20 years ago, Voxman continues to teach private clarinet students.
The School of Music is part of the Division of Performing Arts in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
