UI Pharmacy Professor Named To National Committee On Hypertension

Barry L. Carter, Pharm.D., professor and head of clinical and administrative pharmacy at the University of Iowa, has been named to the next Joint National Committee on Prevention, Detection, Evaluation and Treatment of High Blood Pressure (JNC-VII).

Claude Lenfant, director of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, named the members of the committee, which develops the national treatment guidelines for high blood pressure.

Carter will serve on the prevention and treatment writing panel of JNC-VII. Carter held a position on the JNC-V committee in 1993 as the first clinical pharmacist named to the body; he also served on the JNC-VI committee in 1997.

The new JNC-VII guidelines are to be released in May 2003.
