Local student participates in UI College of Law Legal Clinic

(Name), of (hometown), is a student in the University of Iowa College of Law’s Legal Clinic for the spring semester. (Name) is a (second-year/third-year) student in the UI law school.

Participation in the UI College of Law’s Legal Clinic gives students an opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge of the law to real cases under the supervision of faculty members and other attorneys. Participants represent clients such as financially distressed farmers in bankruptcy proceedings, victims of domestic violence, persons with disabilities, and other clients in a wide range of civil and criminal cases. In the clerkship programs, students act as law clerks to trial court judges. They observe court proceedings, conduct research and draft legal memoranda and court papers.

Students in the program are placed in law offices in Iowa City, Cedar Rapids, Davenport and Des Moines, where they act as staff attorneys assisting in all phases of the legal process. Typical placements include: Student Legal Services; the Iowa City city attorney's office; Legal Services Corporation in Iowa City and Cedar Rapids; HELP Legal Services in Davenport; the U.S. Attorney's Office in Cedar Rapids and U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Cedar Rapids.
