Women’s Resource and Action Center offers new discussion groups

The Women’s Resource and Action Center at the University of Iowa is offering a variety of discussion groups for the spring semester. All meetings will be held at the Center, 130 N. Madison Street (across from the Iowa Memorial Union), unless otherwise noted. Group participation is free; however, a $10 donation is suggested. Pre-registration is required for some groups. Facing Discrimination Post 9/11 —The group will meet on Sundays from 6 to 7:30 p.m., beginning Feb. 2. It is designed to provide a safe discussion space for anyone facing discrimination due to the events of Sept. 11, 2001. Pre-registration is required.

The Gender Puzzle — This weekly group will explore gender through videos, articles and discussion. People of any gender identity and sexual orientation are encouraged to join. Participants will meet on Mondays from 7 to 9 p.m. beginning Feb. 3. Pre-registration is required.

Dealing with Divorce: Healing and Finding Personal Power — This drop-in support group will meet on Tuesdays from 7 to 8:30 p.m., beginning Feb. 4. To check on childcare availability, call (319) 335-1486.

Heart’s Desire — What is it that gives meaning to your life? Participants will explore this topic through reading, discussion and writing. This six-week group will meet on Wednesdays from 6 to 8 p.m., beginning March 5.

Lesbian Reading Group —A semester-long discussion group designed to give lesbian women an opportunity to learn from one another and build a sense of community. The group will meet from 7:30 to 9 p.m. on the third Thursday of the month beginning January 23.

Recovering from Abuse: Rebuilding Your Life —An eight-week support group to meet the needs of women recovering from an abusive relationship. The group will work to create a supportive peer community that fosters resiliency and strength. Participants will meet on Tuesdays from 6:30 to 8 p.m. beginning on Feb. 11.

Single Hip Mamas Group — A drop-in support group for women parenting on their own will meet on Mondays from 5:30 to 7 p.m. beginning Jan. 27. The group will seek to provide an environment in which mothers can learn from each other and celebrate life with their children. Childcare will be available if participants request it by Thursday of the week prior to the meeting.

Transitions – Transgender Support Group — This six-week support group will provide members a supportive environment in which to share experiences of transitioning with peers. The group will meet on Tuesdays from 7 to 8:30 beginning Feb. 11. Pre-registration is required.

Whites for Racial Equality Discussion Group — This six-week group will provide a safe environment for open, honest discussion about race relations. Participants will focus on self-reflection and creating anti-racist attitudes and behaviors. The group will meet on Wednesdays from 7 to 8:30 p.m. beginning Feb. 19. Participation is open to both men and women.
