IOWA WRITERS WORKSHOP FACULTY MEMBERS GALVIN AND MCPHERSON WIN LANNAN
LITERARY FELLOWSHIPS
Iowa Writers Workshop faculty members James Galvin and James Alan McPherson
are among nine writers who have been awarded Lannan Literary Fellowships.
The nine new winners will share $545,000 from the Lannan Foundation, which
launched its literary fellowship program in 1989 to honor writers of exceptional
quality.
In addition to being members of the permanent faculty of the Writers
Workshop, both Galvin and McPherson are workshop graduates.
McPherson won the Pulitzer Prize in fiction for Elbow Room, and
his other books include Hue and Cry, and the memoirs Crabcakes
and A Region Not Home: Reflections from Exile.
Galvin has written several volumes of poetry, which were collected in Resurrection
Update. He is also the author of The Meadow, a history of
the terrain and people of a high-mountain meadow in southern Wyoming near
his home above Tie Siding, and the novel Fencing the Sky. His
new book of poems, X, will be published this year.
Writers Workshop alumni who have won past Lannan Fellowships include
David Wong Louie, Gish Jen, Stuart Dybek, Donald Justice, Stephen Wright,
Denis Johnson, Sandra Cisneros and John Edgar Wideman.
