Yager Diversity Conference Set For Feb. 28

The University of Iowa College of Education's Diversity Committee, together with The Phyllis M. Yager Commitment, will hold The Diversity Conference Friday, Feb. 28 in the Lindquist Center.

The conference, open to all UI faculty, staff and students, will feature diversity-related presentations by UI professors, graduate students and other Iowa public school officials.

During the Friday morning session, J. Herman Blake, Ph.D., director of African American Studies, professor of sociology, and professor of educational leadership and policy studies at Iowa State University, will present the conference's opening workshop, "Diversity in our Classrooms: Daunting Challenge, Creative Opportunity" at 8:30 a.m.

Conference participants may attend any of more than a dozen diversity presentations during the afternoon session. Among the presentations will be "Sex Differences in Early Adolescent Music Students' Self-Concept" by UI psychology graduate student Kristen Rizzo, and "Silenced Voices: Effective Instruction for African American Students" by UI graduate student Tiffany Flowers.

The event will conclude with a panel discussion during which the top presenters of the conference will be acknowledged and the Phyllis M. Yager Commitment to Diversity Award will be presented.

The award will go to two recipients, Rick Williams, associate principal at Washington High School in Cedar Rapids, and Paula Baumann, a school counselor at Prescott Elementary School in Dubuque.

Additionally, three finalists will be recognized: Georgie Klevar from Northeast Iowa Community College in Calmar; Sarah Davis, a bilingual kindergarten teacher from Columbus Junction; and Betsy Nefzger, an English as a Second Language teacher also from Columbus Junction.
